Indianapolis coach Shane Steichen announced that Jones would start the Sept. 7 season opener against the Dolphins, beating out Anthony Richardson, who just two years ago was dubbed the franchise’s quarterback of the future.

When Colts head coach Shane Steichen named Jones the winner of the starting quarterback job on Tuesday, he cited the veteran’s mastery of the offensive system, even though Anthony Richardson had a two-year head start playing in Steichen’s scheme.

Daniel Jones is in his seventh NFL season but first with the Colts. Anthony Richardson is in his third season after being drafted by the Colts.
