The former Duke of York no longer has his title of "prince," which one royal historian said is "very much a step down." Andrew Mountbatten Windsor, this week, was stripped of his royal titles and is now again a commoner.
The surname has always been hyphenated but the name appeared without a hyphen in the statement from Buckingham Palace on Thursday.
A fortnight ago, he was Prince Andrew, Duke of York, Earl of Inverness and Baron Killyleagh, Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order, Royal Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter.
Andrew Mountbatten Windsor is set to get a six-figure payout and an annual payment as part of his “relocation settlement” after being forced out of the Royal Lodge, it has been claimed.
A coat of arms bestowed upon Andrew when he was a child has been removed from Windsor Castle’s St George Chapel, according to the BBC. The red, yellow, blue and white banner is connected to his membership of the Order of the Garter, which he received in 2006.
According to the royal family's website, when male or unmarried female descendants of Queen Elizabeth need to use a surname (which is what Americans would more often refer to as a last name), Mountbatten-Windsor is available to them. It's unclear why the statement regarding Andrew listed the name without a hyphen.
