Conventional long-range strike capabilities rely on single-use missile systems with limited at-sea reload capacity. Such systems also require additional infrastructure and assets like runways, which is why the Defense Department components say drones with standard munition capabilities would be preferable for protecting naval surface combatants.
The hot item on the Navy’s drone wish list is unmanned aircraft that sailors can launch from smaller ships to carry out long-range attacks.
Russia is using larger drones as carriers to deliver FPVs for precision attacks from hundreds of miles away. Gerberas, most often seen as decoys during Shahed attacks, are carrying and launching small FPV attack drones far inside Ukraine.
The Department of Energy is developing superbatteries that would substantially extend the range of combat drones such as those used by Ukraine. The greater range would allow the drones to conduct surveillance or drop munitions much further behind enemy lines than is currently possible.
