Browns head coach search still limited by NFL rules after first week of playoffs ends
The Cleveland Browns head coach search in progress, the NFL rules on interviews will delay the hiring timeline
There are NFL rules in place for the upcoming coaching hiring cycle following the firing of multiple coaches on Monday.
Those coaches must wait until Jan. 26, when either they were eliminated from the playoffs or have a bye week before the Super Bowl. Coaches on the Super Bowl teams are allowed to be interviewed through Feb. 1 but are forbidden from talking to other teams after that until Feb. 9, the day after the Super Bowl.
NFL teams must also abide by the league’s Rooney Rule while conducting both coach and executive interviews. Established in 2003 and named after former Pittsburgh Steelers owner Art Rooney, the rule was put in place to increase diversity in leadership across the NFL.
A breakdown of the league's policies governing when teams can schedule interviews with coaches from other NFL teams.
