Jockey Junior Alvarado has been fined and suspended for whipping Sovereignty too many times during his Kentucky Derby-winning ride last Saturday at Churchill Downs. The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority on Friday ordered Alvarado to pay a $62,000 fine and suspended him for two Kentucky racing days, May 29 and May 30.

Sovereignty is a Godolphin homebred. It’s the first Derby win for that ownership group. Sovereignty’s sire is Into Mischief and his mare is Crowned, by Bernardini. Sovereignty is now 3-2-0 in six career starts.

Sovereignty won in a rainy 151st Kentucky Derby, coming around the outside to edge out the race favorite, Journalism. Journalism held on for second, while Baeza rounded out the top three. Sovereignty had 7-to-1 odds entering Saturday's race.
