Less than a day after the Supreme Court said the Trump administration had to “facilitate” the return of a man mistakenly deported to El Salvador, the case appeared headed for even murkier waters.

Kilmar Abrego Garcia’s story appeared as if it would begin and end in his native El Salvador. His attorneys say he fled the country at 16 because a local gang threated to kill him.

In the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision, U.S. district court judge Paula Xinis ordered the federal government to provide an update on Abrego Garcia’s physical whereabouts and the steps the administration has taken and will take to facilitate his return. But the Friday 9:30 a.m. deadline came and went with no movement from the government.
