The 240 and 301 area codes are used by residents and businesses in Allegany, Charles, Garrett, Montgomery, Prince George’s, St. Mary’s, and Washington counties.

The new area code will be coming to Maryland due to a "dwindling supply" of phone numbers with the area codes "240 and 301," according to officials.

They said people with existing 240 and 301 phone numbers will not have to change them; the new area code will be assigned only to new numbers in that region.

Maryland residents who already have a 240 or 301 area code can maintain their existing area codes and phone numbers, the PSC said in a statement.
