South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, Donald Trump's pick to lead the agency central to his vision of cracking down on illegal immigration, faced senators Friday at a confirmation hearing and promised to be a tough hand in carrying out the president's vision for the sprawling Department of Homeland Security.

Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio) claimed Alejandro Mayorkas, the DHS secretary under President Joe Biden, had “allowed” around 400 people on the terrorism watch list, formally known as the “terrorist screening data set,” to “come into this country illegally.” Noem cited similar figures.

Border Patrol Chief Jason Owens is retiring in April, and will be replaced by Texas Border Czar Mike Banks, after a historic crisis at the southern border.
