There was a widespread warning on Monday for kids to get vaccinated against measles after a child in Texas died last week from the illness — the first in the U.S. since 2015. Numbers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show weekly cases of measles spiking nationwide in 2025 compared with the last couple of years.

Massachusetts has not received any reports of recent measles cases, as outbreaks spread across the country and after an unvaccinated child died.

Lucas Dos Santos Amaral was picked up by federal immigration officials last month while they were seeking someone who looked like him. The 29-year-old does not have a criminal record.

Currently, Massachusetts has no measles cases. However, across state lines, Rhode Island has seen one case so far this year as has New York. Here's which states have reported cases in 2025, as of Feb. 25: An outbreak is defined by the CDC as a state that has three or more related cases of the disease.

These three Massachusetts towns have fast growing populations as well as high median incomes and average home values.
