In the past month, lawmakers have taken action to reign in the lottery, including advancing a bill that prohibits the use of couriers. The Texas Rangers and attorney general’s office also are investigating a $95 million jackpot in 2023 and a $83.5 million win last month.
The investigation into two controversial lottery jackpots in Texas had drummed up questions about the role of online ticketing firms known as lottery couriers in the state – and nationwide.
Couriers take orders online, purchase lottery tickets from a retailer and send a scanned copy to the buyer for a fee.
Three Powerball tickets sold in Texas won $50,000 each but just missed the $219 million jackpot, lottery officials say. The tickets matched four of five winning numbers and the Powerball in the drawing Saturday, Feb. 22, the Texas Lottery said.
