Dallas Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving is exploring a dramatic move to represent Australia, the country of his birth, in international competition, despite having won gold with Team USA at the Rio Olympics in 2016.

Shortly after last weekend’s All-Star Game in San Francisco, the Mavericks guard was asked if he would consider representing Australia at the 2028 Olympic Games. Based on his answer, Irving seems optimistic about suiting up for the Boomers in the future.

Speaking from the 2025 NBA All-Star Game mini-tournament, Dallas Mavericks franchise combo guard Kyrie Irving expressed his desire to play in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. However, he wants to represent Australia -- not Team USA.

Irving, 32, was born in Melbourne and raised in the U.S. He's twice played for Team USA, winning a gold medal in Rio at the 2016 Olympics and winning gold at the 2014 World Cup. He didn't play for Team USA at the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo or at Paris 2024.
