“Confidence remains high that Iona will stay well south of the Hawaiian Islands,” forecasters report. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 15 miles from the center, while tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 70 miles from the center. There are no other coastal watches or warnings in effect.
The National Hurricane Center gives the latest update on Hurricane Iona and says it is "rapidly weakening" to the south of Hawaii.
Iona is expected to strengthen and become a major hurricane Tuesday before weakening around the middle of the week. The hurricane has maximum sustained winds of about 85 mph (137 kph).
Tropical Storm Keli, meanwhile, was located about 795 miles southeast of Honolulu with maximum sustained winds near 40 mph and higher gusts. Keli was moving west at 15 mph and is expected to maintain that general motion over the next couple of days.
Hurricane Iona has strengthened into a Category 3 storm far southeast of the Hawaiian Islands. The NHC is also tracking more in the Pacific.
The next named storm of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season will be Dexter. The fourth named storm in the Atlantic basin typically arrives Aug. 15, with the average first hurricane forming Aug. 11.
