Beta-lactam antibiotics are a group of antibiotics that contain a beta-lactam ring as a common chemical feature. They disrupt the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall. Beta-lactam antibiotics inhibit bacterial cell wall synthesis. Due to the structural similarity to D-alanyl-D-alanine, beta-lactam antibiotics act as substrate analogues by covalently binding to the serine in the transpeptidase active site. In this way, they irreversibly block the enzyme that is essential for cell wall synthesis.
