Field Notes: October 25, 2025 Location: Salmon River Trail, Mt. Hood National Forest, Oregon Encounter Summary: The trail was a carpet of damp, electric-green moss, the air cool and smelling of wet cedar. In a patch of hypnum, I spotted it: a flawless, walnut-sized white mushroom cap, smooth as porcelain, perched on a delicate stem. It looked like any number of common forest fungi.
