🏢 The United Nations headquarters was almost put in Michigan! On Dec. 7, 1945 Michigan leaders formally offered the entire 33,000-acre Sugar Island (near Sault Ste. Marie) as a peaceful new “International Island” for the U.N. headquarters. Detroit newspapers published proposals showing massive U.N. buildings on Sugar Island. However, John D.
